If I Have Been Seizure Free And Off Meds For 7 Years, Am I "cured?" Will I Have To Worry About Seizures Anymore?
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , I feel once you’ve had seizures,, no matter how long you’ve gone without one, there’s always a chance they could come back. Several years ago I saw a Urologist for my overactive bladder & he put me on a pill called Elavil & I had gone several years without a seizure & my Pediatric Neurologist, who I saw till I was almost 30, thought I had grown out of my seizures & slowly took me off my medicine. While on that Elavil I had my first seizure in 6 to 8 years & since I had gone so long without a seizure I began to wonder if the Elavil had anything to do with that pacific seizure & so I looked at the side effects & sure enough it had a side effect of seizures & my Mom & I were so sure we had told the Urologist about my seizures. I’ll always blame that particular seizure on the Elavil since I had gone so long without a seizure. I’ve been back on meds since. So I got off the Elavil & later had surgery for an implant to help my overactive bladder since pills didn’t help. Then about 2 years later I had another seizure & have had seizures every year since. So just because you go several years without a seizure, I’ll always believe that there will be that chance that more could come eventually. Your friend in Texas, Becky

RandySherman, that's why I don't mind being on medicine still even though I am over 6 years seizure free!!
I had 10 yrs seizure free before. My doc started to wein me off my pills and sure enough they came back worse, 3 to 4 a week. I was put back on same amount of AEDs and seizures were back at bay. There is no cure for epilepsy only epilepsy under control. Enjoy every moment of life and celebrate that we are all here alive. 💜
There is no full cure for Epilepsy. You may feel cured from being seizure free and able to reduce your meds.
You may be doing very well right now, but Epilepsy can come back with vengeance. And your seizures may come back again.
Five years is the big mark, but people get it back after that, so enjoy every moment. I had surgery, and next week is ten years, and I am still trying to enjoy every moment!
