Are Balance Issues A Side Effect From Medication Or The Actual Seizures?
I take lacosimide, lamotrigine, and phenytoin and have horrible balance! I often have to use my walker on bad days! 😂
All 3 of those meds cause balance issues. You can Google the medications you are taking (be specific, ie: does lamotrigine cause balance issues?) and they can tell you. If it’s bad, a cane or walker can help, especially when you’re tired. Also avoid turning too quickly or trying to do things like you did when you were a teenager. I learned that! 😉 Good luck!
I think it’s a side affect
LaurieWalla, it could be either one. I have vertigo/ dizziness after an aura, or in the time between 1–2 hours after I take my meds. I take the most balance affecting meds after dinner and before bed, that way I’m less likely to have a problem.
You can tell it is the medicine if the effect comes and goes. After you take your dose, are you going to be unbalanced for a particular amount of time? That happens to me, and the effect fades when the medicine effect goes. Of course, all this is because of the effect of AEDs in the brain. Our medicine is designed to slow down, shut down brain function. It is a good way to stop seizures, yes, but it stops other brain functions too...
I have with my neurologist next week. Will ask.
