@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , I’m almost 46 & have had seizures since the 2nd grade after hitting my head on the monkey bars but we’ve always said that no one knows if I got my seizures from that, my Dad or both. My Dad had bad grand mal seizures & his didn’t start till sometime after my parents were married & no one knew what caused his seizures. My older brother apparently had just a few seizures as a kid but then they stopped & one of his daughters had a couple seizures or so shortly after being born or something like that but she also stopped having them. I’m currently going to counseling for my verbal tics & before I started the counseling they did a Quantitative EEG & Neurofeedback tests & the symptoms the tests showed were an acquired brain injury, sleep/insomnia, Anxiety & LD: visual (processing & attention). I have a learning disability, especially in math & was in special ed math in school. The tests seemed to be pretty accurate. But not everyone will pass on their Epilepsy to their children, I don’t think, but it might be possible for some. I’m sure it’s just something you might mention to his Family doctor, just so they’ll know. Your friend in Texas, Becky

It can be but mostly not. Ask your family doctor to run tests to make sure.

Epilepsy can be genetic . But there are people that get diagnosed with epilepsy, from head injuries and a couple of other ways.

My 2 cousins are epileptic. My brother who passed before I was born that would be almost 60 years ago had seizures. Back then I don’t think it was talked about much. I’m glad it’s a different time now. And my uncle died of a brain bleed same with my grandma. And I have both . So I’m inclined to think it’s hereditary. I’m the only one in my immediate family who has these 2 issues. I would never want anyone else in my family having either.
