Been Told That I’m Not Having Seizures. I Have Been Told It’s All Psychological. So I’m Lying And It’s All In My Head? Why Am I On Meds?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Why am I not allowed to drive, operate machinery, swim or ride a bike?. Is that all in my head, or is someone covering their ass because they know hey could be wrong?

Ebo , You may want to research PNES or NES ( Psychological Non Epileptic Seizures or Non Epileptic Seizures ) . That coulwhat you’re experiencing. Your seizures aren’t created from abnormal brainwaves.

But the Dr. still treats the condition, Epilepsy, because of your seizures. And like the many of us , we can’t legally drive.

It should be alright for you to swim . Just as long as you have a friend or family member with you. When you feel confident you could try and swim on your own.

Same with biking . Do same as , what I mentioned above

I myself have rode my Mt.Bike and swam a lot through my life . If went swimming by myself , it was alway in a place where there was a lifeguard.

It's understandable to feel frustrated and question if your epilepsy symptoms are "all in your head." However, the driving, swimming, and activity restrictions are in place to protect your safety, not to undermine you. Even if some seizures have psychological components, the medications and precautions are still warranted based on your history. Rather than viewing it as people "covering their behinds," try to see the restrictions as caring actions to prevent avoidable harm. Focus on what you can do safely now and set positive goals for the future. With time and the right treatment, your condition may improve to allow for more independence.

Ebo No one is now denying you are having seizures its just the source is not eplilepsy. An in hospital EEG done while having one shows no change in brain waves so not from epilepsy. Good thing bout this is with special psyche treatments seizures could be eliminated as well. Was hoping mine would be same but EEG confirmed my epilepsy. Will need meds to control for life but glad we have them, know all nasty ones will be staved off. For the 52 years of my epilepsy still happy + healthy see no reason to fear them either.
