Changing Anti Seizure Meds

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi
I am about to change seizure medication shortly. I’m currently on Tegratol and about to change to Lamotrigine.I am wondering if anybody has done this and how they found the transition? Any tips or advice would be helpful please

Lamotrigine is a good medicine that makes a difference. That is one that I did not have side effects from. Give yourself time to get used to it. Any change is a challenge at first but it can make a difference.

I have had my medications changed so many times. When I first start taking a new medication I’ll make it longer without a seizure but then they all return

Changed from Tegretol to Keppra just over 12 months ago. The change over process took 7 weeks but 3 months to somewhat adjust. 3 more months to completely adjust to it. Yes, it's not Lamotrigine but the changeover process should be very similar. The worst part is coming off the Tegretol.

Tegratol was unsuccessful at treating my seizures. I’ve been on lamotrrigine for about 20 years, which in combination with clobazam has successfully controlled them for about 10 years.

I’ve developed sleep apnea, and they think that’s what brought the nocturnal ones back, but certainly not as severely or as often. They are still studying the test results, though.

I’m on Lamotrigine for 2 years now and I can tell you that it’s a good one . Some little side effects such as tiredness but nothing major . Comparing to other meds .. I can say it’s a life changing thing
