Interactions With Other Medications

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Well, it has finally happened, my zonisamide and my Abilify have combined for some ugly side effects: hand tremors, and drooling - I look like I have rabies, being the worst and most noticeable. I was wondering if anyone else has had problems with drug interactions with their anticonvulsants.

Oh yes, when my epileptologist at the time and I were going through the many options trying to find what would work there were a few times I could get a surprise or two of a harder seizure than usual. When things like that took place we usually would drop the new medication and move onto the next AED option.

Thankfully there were helpful medications that could be brought together at a low dosage. I remember one of my epileptologists making the comment that he felt like a chemist at times in how the medication had to be just so with my system otherwise it wouldn't work. When we did find a great mixture that worked, it lasted for a good period of time then there were many times we had to discuss making changes of a medication as the activity needed assistance again. The few things I learned while seeking the right mix of my medication is to keep patience and hope alive because without them going day to day is impossible.

Google "Drug interactions checker at Mayo Clinic" GREAT SOURCE! Save it for future reference.
Your pharmacist is also a good source of this information. They're also using a data base.

I am very very careful about drug interactions. I always check with my doctor. I don’t take anything that is not cleared by my doctor. The PA put me on zonenasomide and I couldn’t see or walk. Or eat. I think we all react to each drug differently. I don’t take anything other than AEDs and medication for infection. No allergy pills which I really need bcse I have bad allergies I use saline spray instead. Good luck.
