I went to my primary doctor last week on Friday and got told that the seizure medications cause a person's blood sugar to rise. My primary doctor told me this and find it quite odd. Diabetes can trigger hyperglycemia and can cause seizures. (Not necessarily the kind of seizures we have.) Those diabetes driven seizures seizures are considered serious.

I have heard that the side effects are weight gain with most of the medications, but fortunately, I have not had a problem with that. I have not heard that the AEDs can make your glucose go up, but it does stand to reason that if you have put on weight you might have a higher glucose. Was the sample a fasting sample?

I was really overweight when I took Tranxene. I had this pill when growing up. Later when I started taking my medication again after I stopped taking it for 6 years, I did not start the Tranxene. I could not lose weight with that pill.

My blood sugar has also gone up and I have lamictal zonisamide and onfi and topamax mix. Not sure which one is the culprit but I was warned by my dr. about zonegran. And yes diet is huge!! Low carb no sugar not easy. Watch sleeping patterns. Exercise, basically walk.

I am now significantly overweight. My GP told me many AEDs (Anti-Epilepsy Drugs) contribute to weight gain. I have a Caretaker who prepares a significant breakfast with toast or cereal, eggs, fruit and maybe Yogurt. She does want me to take Vitamin D3, but to get my Calcium from foods. I have an appointment with my Neurologist later this month, so will ask.
