While having the SEEG my mom told me that at one point I started to have a seizure so she pressed the button for doctors and nurses. The doctors asked her “How do you know he’s having a seizure?” My mom was like “I’ve been watching him have seizures for years” 🙄. Actually I was 26 when I had the SEEG I was 17 when I got the Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS).

I had the Surgical Stereo EEG when I was 17 years old. It wasn’t too bad pain wise. For the first 2 or 3 days I couldn’t get out of bed no matter what. For the next couple days I could either sit in a chair (that had an alarm) or lay in bed. By day 5 or 6 I could get up and walk as long as a nurse was near by. I was never in much pain, it was just a lot of weight on my head. The nurses even had to be in the restroom with me while I was going, that wasn’t pleasant. Prayers you have success.

When I had it done, it was called a deep route EEG. They have improved their expectations now. These tests don't last weeks anymore. They take away the medicines to induce the seizures and then start them back up when the seizures are captured on video and the implanted pictures. One thing that can speed up the process for your son is to make him do some deeper thinking while the test is happening. Don't let him watch television as the only activity. The more the mind is engaged, the more seizures happen sooner. This meant I needed a more difficult-counted crochet project; as soon as the seizures started, the crocheting was over. I was in longer than your son will be; be calm and be there to encourage him.

Also, to be his advocate, I was having multiple, and the doctor was not ready to give me back the medicine. Finally, my mom went to the head nurse and said she had brought my medicine and was going to the car to get it. She did not know which to give me first and in what order, but the seizures needed to end. They gave me the first medicine when she came up with them in her hand.
