Epilepsy In The Workplace
If there's a chance I may have a seizure at work or I may need certain accomodations for safety reasons, should I tell a possible employer about my epilepsy or not?
I would not. While the Americans with Disabilities Act protects you from losing your job due to a disability, a hiring manager can also see it as a reason not to hire you even if the employer is classified as an Equal Opportunity Employer.
From my experience, anything beyond cashier work exacerbated the seizure activity. I have a desk job right now and am able to work full time. For many, stress is a seizure trigger so please take that into consideration when seeking employment.
As a persons who has had a seizure at work, the grand mal at my first job was the worst. I quit the next day. I was working in a grocery store and ended up being taken out in an ambulance. I was 19 and I felt like everyone was going to treat me differently.
Now, I have petit mals and complex partials at work frequently. Sometimes, I go home shortly after. Sometimes, I do not. Sometimes, no one even knows. I have asked for no special accommodations. Human Resources knows I have epilepsy and so does my boss. If it effects my ability to work, then I leave. Otherwise, I just keep plugging through the day.
If you donβt tell them they may ask you to do a task that is unsafe for someone with seizures to do.
My employer did know about my seizures because they started again while I was working there and actually had a seizure while working. Scared everyone. Fortunately a woman there knew what to do because her husband had seizures due to an on the job accident.
I would at least tell someone who is close to you. I have had a seizure at work before and when I did there was someone there to help. I was found in a bathroom stall but they knew who to call and what to do. I went home after got some rest for a couple days but was still able to come back. It is a law that no job can not hire you because you have seizures. But it sure not safe to keep it a secret if you will be there often.
I have never hidden being Epileptic from any employer. It is important that they know so if precautions need to be put in place then they can put them in place,if i have a seizure whilst at work i have to have a risk assessment done because i work with people that have learning difficulties and may not know how to help me. Most of my employers over the years have been very understanding and if i am ill allow me to have time off.
