Does Anyone Know What, If Any, Fillers Are Used In Generic Medicines?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Since I've moved to Australia I've been taking generic keppra and lamictal. I took the same medicine in the USA, but I'm feeling some intense side effects from the generic medicine here. My friend that's a pharmacist said it could be from fillers that are used in the medicine. I'd pay for the name brand but it's very expensive. And then the stress from the financial strain can cause a seizure. Anyway, could there be something in the medicine that I'm not aware of?

No idea... but if you are at all med sensitive they can make you sick. When I first did my transition to generic Lamictal, it ate up my stomach so badly that I almost couldn't eat for weeks. I eventually healed up and got used to most things again but was left with pretty much lifelong sensitivity to raw lettuce and raw milk.

Fortunately, eventually got back to where I could handle dark greens in moderation and processed dairy like cheese and yogurt and the Lactaid milk (also in moderation) so it didn't actually "create" an allergy. It just messed up my stomach.

Personally I had a terrible experience taking generic medication. The insurance company was trying to save some money so they changed my Brand Name medication to generic medication without telling me. I kept taking my medication without knowing my medication was changed to generic. Eventually I ended up in the hospital 🏥 for some reason without knowing why. My Dr. now when he writes a prescription he adds “Brand Name Medically Necessary”, that makes it a law. Good Luck 🍀 to everyone!
