Epilepsy In Films Or On Tv
More of a statement really but I hate it when epilepsy sufferers are portrayed wrong in films or on tv. The producers just haven't done their research properly!
I think it goes to show that Epilepsy is wrongly looked at as a simple condition. There is never any consideration given to the many types of Epilepsy that sufferers have to live with, the difference in severity and the different effects it has on daily life. I have never seen a scene showing the auras or dizzy spells like I may suffer from as collapsing and rolling about does them much more as watching goes.
When a ER type TV show came out a year ago (maybe two) one of the first episodes was about a young man who was into some sort of sports (football? Wrestling?) who was bought in while having a grand mal. Miraculously, while he was seizing, they somehow managed to get a rubber thing in his mouth (Riiiight.....) and after he had been pumped full of drugs they showed him standing near the ambulance entrance with all the lights flashing. Obviously the writers had no clue that flashing lights set off a lot of epileptics, nor did they have a clue how being drugged up makes you slur.
They shoulder know especially today with all the access we have to medical information and our own experiences that to quote YOGI BEAR.. We're "smarter than the average bear " :)
I've noticed the show has gotten more realistic. I'm assuming that enough people complained online to force them to get a better medical advisor to the writers.
I agree. I remember a different stokes episode growing up where some random girl had a seizure and the little boy was scared it was handled so badly.
