Work And Disability

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question πŸ’
Oklahoma City, OK

I am really having a tough time with missing work due to med changes/seizures. I HAVE to work or I get depressed etc, not to mention money. I DO NOT consider myself disabled, but starting to wonder if I can work part time and also get disability benefits? Please advise. Thank you! 😊😘

You have that correct. It's not legal to get rid of someone with a disability but a business will try to.

Legally, Carol, they can't find a way of getting rid of you in the UK. That doesn't mean they won't try. I used to work as a teacher and lecturer. Two days after I was complimented on my work (teaching languages), I was summoned to the college head's office to be told that I was going to be dismissed after all - as a safety hazard. I might perhaps cause fire, he said. Teaching languages, I had to ask, how? Much worse: he had personally delivered to my now late wife some hours earlier, without my knowledge, a letter saying I was to be dismissed. She was already ill at the time, and never recovered from that shock. Madder still: I was told that my period of notice was extended from one month to three, because of my good work. So was I a threat or not, I had to ask. If I was, he should remove me immediately. If not, then this dismissal was unjust. Our marriage didn't survive, and neither did my late wife. That was almost 40 years ago. I never worked in my profession again thanks to that action of his.

I don't know how it works in the US but in the UK a company can't fire you because you are genuinely off work due to sickness. I've had a bad year at work but luckily have kept my job and just hoping things improve. I only work part time and think i'd struggle with full time so it might be too much for you and making you tired or stressed.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member I hear you on all this. I've had so many different medical changes I feel like a walking pharmacy LOL I try not to get depressed over seizures but it happens at times to me. I have no idea why I became epileptic as I was never injured. You could work part time and be on disability you just couldn't make a lot of money. I believe social security raised how much someone can make but not by much.

If you decide to apply for SSI ,make sure you have a lot of DOCUMENTATION about your Epilepsy. You can work part-time while on SSI. You may want to check with a work program called β€œTicket To Work” .
