Teva Lamotrigine Shortage

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

How many of you are affected by the Teva Lamotrigine shortage? Also how many of you take a seizure med manufactured by one company and stick to that company. I have been taking my medication and in June my pharmacy for reasons they cannot explain to me decided to change companies and now the Teva is no longer available. Of course they think I am upset over nothing. I told them that it is their mess up and that now I have to deal with the adjustments AGAIN of nausea, headache, and body aches… read more

I had the same issue. I prefer the Teva brand but my pharmacy keeps telling me it's on back order. Hate the new brand too many side effects.

I had the same discussion with my Pharmacist - they tried to fob me off with the excuse there was a shortage of the brand I'd been prescribed and which was clearly marked on my prescription. I presented them with evidence there wasn't a shortage - they then admitted/confirmed the reason was purely down to cost

The same thing happened to me with Lamotrigine my pharmacy were always short or telling me it was no longer available for them to order. They didn't understand I needed the same brand medication every time my prescription was issued (even though they were supposed to dispense exactly what the doctor told them to). In the end I switched pharmacy and was put on Lamictal. My new pharmacy is brilliant the chemist prescribes exactly what is on my prescription & I haven't had any problems. The chemists have no idea at all how much switching brands affects us & to be honest in my opion t's so ignorant of them. It's ok for them they give us what they think is ok & to hell with how it makes us feel.

Update: I’ve now been on lamotrigine by Torrent for 3 months now. I had been taking teva for years without any seizures. As we all know now, teva is no longer making lamotrigine. When I started the Torrent, I got very dizzy, head ache & couldn’t function. I could tell I was over medicated. By the time of my next dose id be feeling better. Take the next dose and I’d be back to not being able to function. My doctor said I needed to let my body get use to it. I had a job and couldn’t afford to miss any work. So I decided to space my pills out over the day. It worked!! No seizures & no dizziness etc!! With experimenting I’v spaced it out to five different times a day. I don’t think my doctor was pleased about me doing it on my own but glad that it seems to be working.

Teva is no longer making lamotrigine except in 25mg. I take 550mg per day. I have tried other manufacturers in the past but they did not control my seizures.
My insurance has lamotrigine made by Torrent, & also Taro. Any suggestions? I’m extremely worried.
I’m 68yrs old basically seizure free for 20 yrs. HELP
