Generic Vs. Brand. What Are Your Experiences? In My Case With Lamotrigine
The first week after my hospital stay I felt great with higher dosage and added benzo. I’ve been on Lamictin for 10 years and doing great on it. Btw this is the same as Lamictal, both manufactured by GSK, even packaging is similar, but called Lamictin in South Africa
Then 2 weeks ago the pharmacy said they have trouble with the suppliers of Lamictin and big shortages but that the generic Epitec (manufactured by Cipla) is as good as the original (my neurologist also okayed the change). Suddenly… read more
I use to be on Lamictal some years back . I had to change to the generic , Lamotrigin . The name brand has a side effect, that can cause the Kidney Stones to act up and start coming out, when urinating.
It started to experience that after being on it for awhile. Kidneys started coming out from the meds. One day it became so bad , I ended in the hospital.after that incident my doctor took me off and started me on Lamotrigin. I haven’t experienced any Lidny Stones since.
I'm really scared to go on epitec as I've heard many bad accounts from switching from lamictin to epitec and my job requires me to drive a lot.
I've been using lamictin for over 10 years with no problems.
I've even phoned Glaxo Smith Kline that manufactures & imports lamictin to find out why there's a shortage of stock.
Apparently SAHPRA is blocking it at customs due to an error on the packaging.
Surely this warrants a concession from SAHPRA if it's only a packaging issue??
What pharmacy chain did you find your lamictin in the end SunnyB?
Hi Sunny , at the very beginning Lamictal was brand new and the generic brand wasn’t out yet. By the time I experienced the pain from the side effect , the generic I have been on for quite sometime . I’m still on it today and , I’m not getting any of the bad side effects.
Their equal
If you take one you should be able to handle the other.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member I am aware of that possible side-effect, luckily never experienced it. I have a great GP who is very thorough and his knowledge of medications and their side effects is amazing. He tests my blood every 6 months, including liver and kidney function tests, just to keep the pulse on whether or not the meds are doing more good than bad.
