Training A Seizure Response Dog

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
State College, PA

I was recently diagnosed with epilepsy after having a rather unexpected and intense grand-mal seizure. I was alone and out of it for at least three days, and I think that my dog probably saved my life. She is 2.5 years old, already well trained (knows pretty much every basic command I could think of when she was growing up and can even walk next to me outside without a leash), and has the temperament appropriate for a service animal. All a business can ask is if it’s a service animal and what task. All you have to say is service dog and attends to my condition. It has to be housebroken, on a leash, not petted by others, and obey your commands. You don’t have to train an emotional support animal. These are qualifications.

Americans with Disabilities Act 28 Code of Federal Regulations Part 36 104 is the law that explains a Service Dog,
In a nut shell, the dog must be trained more than one task directly related to assisting an individual during a seizure.
Be prepared to demonstrate these task and training journals to a judge in a courtroom if you every get dragged into court by a business. Because of that, I would hire a trainer to work with you, and vow to stay in touch and back cYa if needed.
Good luck in your journey.

i have (in indiana) trainers that do service dog stuff. google 'service dog training in (your state)' or 'special trainer in (your state)'. it was a drive (about 1/2 an hour) but she did training and specialized training. my dog is shy around other dogs so we didnt do the specialized stuff.
