What If You Don’t Know The Trigger For Your Seizures?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Exeter, UK

I don’t know when I have or going to have a seizure I get no warning at all but I have tried cutting out certain foods/not looked at certain lights all the common triggers but I’m trying to think outside the box and every time I do my mind goes blank has anyone got any suggestions? But then I think could the answer be closer to home?, I do take medication also I have tried nearly all the common epileptic drugs out there and just want an answer/opinion.
Thank you in advance.

I don't know when I'm gonna have one either, my fiance has been around almost all so I try not to go places without him. If I'm gonna be gone for a long time. I also take meds. It seems lack of sleep and stress cause alot of mine. I broke up with X I was with another,big mistake, stress almost everyday. I had a sezier. Before that with the guy I left it had been almost 5 years and no sezier. No longer with the guy who caused all the stress.

I spend a few nights in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and found out my two triggers are lack of sleep and stress. The EMU was a rough few days/ nights but it might be something worth asking your neurologist about if you want more precise answers.

My son was in the emu also for 5 nights. It is not much fun as they wean you off your meds until you have a seizure. You are hooked up to monitors and video. It was helpful to her the info from it as it showed sleep deprivation and stress are triggers for him too. He has no auras before having seizures. It also showed what part of the brain too. He also had the MEG test which showed his are coming from the frontal lobe. Surgery isn’t an option at this point for him. I’m hoping that since we found out about his MTHFR gene mutation that he can start on Folic acid and B-complex and maybe that will stop his seizures.

Not everyone knows , when they are going to have a warning nor a aura , tell you that your having a seizure.

I have Complex Partial seizures and they are a type of Epilepsy where , I don’t know when I seizure. My family and friends will alert me when I seizure.
I to , don’t know when I seizure.

One thing you may want to do is try and notice clues. This is the only time I know that I seizured.

Examples ;
Did you spill food or drink , but you only remember sitting down to eat . Or you were drink the beverage before it spilt all over you.

Keep aware of how your body is acting. So let’s say you were sitting, your calm and your heart beat and pulse is steady. Next moment you feel like you ran a marathon and your heart and pulse is pumping fast , yet your still sitting.

If you start standing up to walk to a destination and your feeling fine , the next thing you find yourself on the floor , maybe a piece of skin was cut open or you have sprained ankle or something.

These are a few clues to pay attention for. Try noticing anything unusual. It doesn’t mean that they are always going to happen. Most of the time you won’t know when you have a seizure.

Don’t forget the big basic triggers .
Stress , not enough sleep and take meds on time .
