Human Rights Lawyers For Persons With Epilepsy

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Burns Lake, BC

Hi there,
I’ve got a friend who is having difficulties at work. They say she’s lying about things but because of her meds, she can’t remember what happened on a specific day. Serious repercussions could ensue and ruin her career. In my mind it’s a human rights thing because they ignored her entire medical history and accused her of lying even though it is the side effects fault, not hers. What would I tell her to do? She lives in Canada.
Thanks in advance

It sound like you may want to get your Dr. ,you boss , and any of the staffs , that were involved. Hopefully the doctor will help educate them

Another thought for your friend Terri, is to talk with a Disability law firm .

I wish I could of know about this when I was younger . I had a job in the past where my supervisor felt that I wasn’t working hard enough. Mainly , I wasn’t working as fast as the others were. They didn’t understand the struggle, living with Epilepsy. Yet they were doing more wrongful things , than I . They were getting away with smoking marijuana, when it was illegal in all states in the U.S. . I never thought of getting a hold of the Epilepsy Foundation and a Disability law firm.

Thanks for the info, good thing she belongs to a union. It is a very trivial thing over which she is accused of misconduct. Blown way out of proportion. Good thing she loves her job and is really good at it, she is not planning on going anywhere. She has already contacted Human Rights Council ans been told she has a valid case. Wish her luck🙂

I believe she would definitely need a lawyer and proof from her doctors. Then think about what you want to do!!

I'd speak with her neurologist & get them to work with her about if she needs a lawyer cause it may help & be cheaper for her. I'm from Canada too. I went through school with teachers & co-op workers not believing me with seizures happening in front of them. For sure get the Dr. to help her with knowing what the medication is doing & if needed get a Dr.'s note first stating what's causing it then go further if needed.
