Swimming With Epilepsy
Does anyone swim, kayak and snorkel with epilepsy?
My husband has 2 tonic-clonic seizures on Nov 2nd. He's on time release keppra and has not had any since. My question has to do with open water. I'm not so concerned about swimming pool type situation.
We live on a lake and have been quite active in the water. Does anyone swim with epliepsy? If you do, how do you
make sure you are as safe as you can be? Swim? Snorkel? kayak?
There are many different types of epilepsy. I've been told by all of my doctors not to swim, (I have temporal lobe epilepsy) unless you know me you wouldn't notice me having a seizure. I get up,walk, organize things all while I'm having episodes. So be careful!
I have swam in both pool and lake. I am also a certified lifeguard, for me ive learned what my triggers are, and ive also learned to recognize symptoms before hand. So im not worried one moment in the water, cause i know to not go in the water when im feeling off, and if i start to feel off in the water i try to get out as soon as possible. When i m feeling tired i make sure to get more sodium in me, which helps me particularily. and to make sure i stay hydrated. Swimming has actually helped me with understanding my seizures better, and my neurologist actually recommended i dnt stop. If your swimming out in the lifeguard, even people without epilepsy, and who are the beat swimmers should always go with someone, unless its a well popular visited location. So buddy system works well, i wouldnt say a life jacket is needed unless your in a boat, or your not confident in swimming skills. If theres a lifeguard or other people around you can let them know in advance, and you could bring a life jacket with you, not necissarily wearing it but just holding it. So if your tired, you dont have to use extra strength ad overexhert yourself when trying to stay afloat. In my experience as a lifeguard people in situations they dont need a life jacket with their swimming abilities, but they wear it anyways im situations where their not in a boat or going too far, they end up developing a fear without realizing it. Which in emergencies can lead to panic. ( boats are another story always wear lifejacket in the boat) also lifejackets dont help keep u from going face down in the water. I would say buddy system works best to ensure safety, and learnimg tricks of possibly predicting. If you can. Or learning triggers. And doing what you can to eliminate those triggers, ( for me at first i realized hypothermia sometimes triggered seizures so when ever i would feel cold in the water i would find osychological tricks that trick my body into thinking im warm not cold. )

I swim in lake of the ozarks. But never alone. I always have someone close so if something does happen while I am in the water I can be pulled out of the water
