How Many People Out There Who Feel Sad Or Depressed After Having A Seizure?
This might sound rather jaded, but I only feel irritated after a seizure now. I've been having them for so long that they've become a bother rather than depressing or anything like that.
Great to hear! Spread that positive attitude! It is important to know that not only can depression increase your chances of having seizures, but it can also increase loss in Memory Recall. This was the case when comparing the Memory test I took last year and the one that I took this year. I had improved in quite a few categories, but in the few areas that I had decreased (quite significantly) was primarily because of too much depression and increased anxiety. This why I am being trained by my therapist is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). And after several weeks of training, I have noticed improvement in mood, self esteem. And the best part is that is step is a repetitive process, such that it is ingrained in memory and can bring about a major shift to a more positive mindset and in my case even liking and forgiving myself. I am 57 years-old, and I have had depression and anxiety disorder active just about my entire life (my Epilepsy officially started not long after birth -- with my first febrile seizure--, but it wasn't until I stared Kindergarten that depression, anxiety disorder and low self esteem became noticeable. And between the ages of 5 and 14, my Epilepsy was in hibernation, but its return in 1980 a few weeks before starting high school as my first generalized full seizure (though I wasn't diagnosed until 1997, thus they were "fainting spells" then) that is when anxiety and depression became a more significant factor. And no matter what I achieved, I never gave myself much credit for it, thus my self esteem has always been poor. It is all beginning to change now thanks to CBT and GOD providing me more understanding for the miracles He performed to keep me alive (June 2003 - January 2005). Even in the worst of times, we can always have Hope!
I agree with many above. They are more aggravating than anything now
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member Most assuredly. For me though, it's happened so much that the irritation has become rather fleeting. Like when you stub your toe and you think (after saying to yourself "ow, that hurt!") "it just HAD to happen NOW didn't it?" Ya know, then you forget about it after like two minutes and go on with your day. That's just me though. :P
And I am one of those people. Depressed and I say to myself "IS IT AN ATTACK AGAIN" But I need some time after a seizure to look at things more realistically.
