Yes I have been through an EMU and what you should expect is a couple days in a hospital and a bunch of leads glued to your head it will help your doctor see what type of seizures you are having. It can be a very stressful situation so I know how you feel about that I can also tell you breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth my mom taught me that technique and it helps me when I'm stressed about things like this.
Good luck

I totally understand how you feel about being scared, ive learned try not to over tjink it.
Ive had 3 EMUs, last one was beginning of the year. I understand scared no medicine, sleep deprivation and having a seizure with no one around I know comfortable with. As after seizure being around people I knows help me otherwise start have even more anxiety after. But best advise do anything keep you busy, reading, word puzzles, coloring books, cards. I brought headphones listen music as well. You'll feel depressed, wanna give up etc. But best thing I did last emu was make a vision poster board, pics of my close loved ones, motivational saying, funny quotes, all on board so you can look at to give you motivation for and try ease feelings of scared or sadness. I placed it little further from me and eye level. Try to move to chair from bed couple times a day. I noticed when I over thought it my first 2 emus, I had no episodes until several days later agter emu. However this past emu, I didn't over think it as much and had vision board and had 2 episodes within 3 days. Where my first emu's stayed five days and no episodes. However last emu, they changed it up. First 2 emu, they me off meds, sleep deprivation and benadryl and still no episode. Last emu they did no meds, sleep deprivation and alcohol and that triggered an episode. After my episode looked af board and called familiar voice and that helped with anxiety afterwards. Best of luck

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member, I’ve done it on three separate occasion in three different decades. My most recent one being last month.

Your concerns about being off your meds is legitimate. However look at the upside which is that you will be in a hospital with staff that can attend to you asap.

What I always dread about the EMU is the boredom. I will say from my experience, during my last rodeo at this, I did everything I could to overstimulate my mind. I.e. not just sitting and watching tv. I wrote, played with a rubiks cube, and did other things to try and tire my brain.

Good luck!

I guess this will be a 5 day stay and all my seizure meds will be taken away to force seizures. This what I am most scared about.
