What Should I Do If I Experience An Aura?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Rochester, MN

I have had seizures on two occasions. My first ever, two years ago, occurred when I was asleep. The second was earlier this year when I was awake. With the second incident I had, what I now know was, an aura 45 - 60 minutes before I had a tonic-clonic seizure.

Typically I let whoever is around me know what is happening, I take my emergency medication, and I get as close to the floor as I can. After it passes I make sure to eat and drink something and then write everything down to tell my doctor.

An aura is a warning that you can have a seizure soon. I've had seizures and auras all my life. Sometimes now I have auras even though I don't have seizures since I had brain surgery.

Thank you. I appreciate the reply. The complication for me is that time between my aura and the tonic clonic seizure was 45-60 minutes. I'm unclear about how long do I wait to know if I'm going to have seizure.

I only recently started having noticeable seizures and still learning about auras/focal aware, but I make sure I'm sat down and take some breaths slowly until the feeling passes. So far it's helped but could also be the Lamotrigine

I had auras years before I had seizures. Auras do show up on EEGs and the RNS. I do write down the time and day when I have an aura and show them to my neurologist.
