Dating

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi there, really random question but does anyone else have trouble with dating. I barely date anymore as I'm petrified of having a seizure out in public and in front of a date. I hate having to tell a man before I go out with him that I have epilepsy and what to do if I have a seizure on our very first date. It's just a bit embarrassing and I just feel a bit pathetic having to make all these precautions before. I also can't feel safe as im really vulnerable after a seizure so i worry about that… read more

I haven't dated in 30 years but i felt the same way...always afraid that the guy would find out or I'd have a seizure and that would be it but then I found my husband and none of that seemed to matter. We've been married for 30 years. Don't be afraid to open up because if that person cant accept everything about you then he doesnt deserve you

When I got my diagnosis back in 2020, I was worried that people would treat me differently because of Epilepsy. I actually learned that they are more supportive than what I was worried about. You don't have to disclose your epilepsy to anyone right away. You can wait till a few meet up and then when you're comfortable, ease into the conversation of it. You'll be surprised at how many people know at least 1 person who has it. As far as medication goes, have they tried using Briviact? I started on Keppra and it somewhat worked but I was still having smaller seizures with it at 1500mg twice a day. My neurologist switched me to 50 mg twice a day of Briviact and I went 3.5 years seizure free before I had a breakthrough seizure. I'm currently at 100 mg twice a day right now and it's been 2 months I've been seizure free.

I always let the other person know right up front. Then You can find out what kind of person They really are 💜

This site has a pretty good article on “Relationships and Epilepsy “. My personal opinion, don’t overthink it and maybe mention it to your date up front. Can’t hurt I think. This is not advice only my opinion Lydia.

Hey everyone yes I've tried dating; but my marriage at the time wasn't legal over even though we were separated for over 4 yrs. Last October it became legal. But me & the lady decided to stay friends even though the relationship never settle do to the marriage. I say I will & want to be in relationship. I just don't know; but I'll tell anyone if you can't except all of me, we can't be together. So just hang on trust & believe in yourself. the old saying take care of yourself 1st. I have a few true friends as well less seems to be better at this stage for me.
