What Job Should A Person With Epilepsy Work
My very first job I did was in a Summer Youth Employment Training Program which was working a cafeteria back when I was a teenager. The very first real job I got hired on with and had a real paycheck was working in retail. I know that I am not able to drive due to me being too nervous of being behind the wheel. My county also requires a person to go five years without having a seizure in order to drive. I know that some people don't pay attention to it. However, I choose to file the laws in my county. I worked in a call center making car rental reservations and this was fine for me after I got married. Also, I worked in fast food by cleaning the dining room, rest rooms, and janitorial work. I was a lot younger when I did this as well. I tried to do warehouse work by doing cleaning in it and had a sudden death scare. I never did physical manual labor in it. Even though I was a lot older I had too many seizures on the job. I have worked in a daycare center before with children and my neurologist at the time tried to tell me that mental stress is worse than physical stress. I got told not to ever come back at the daycare center due to me having a seizure on the job. This obviously isn't true or the case for everyone. Basically, I have worked in various fields. I work online from home being an Online Academic Tutor and English as a Second Language Teacher. If I was to work by going out again, then I would need to make sure that the pay is appropriate. I have plenty of education with having 5 college degrees (1 Bachelors and 4 Associate Degrees). Also, I try to make sure the job has accommodations and protect me for my safety.
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member This ^^ Alot of companies seem to be going with the Neurodiversity model now. So there is that. What it means is you can apply for a role that is suitable then provided the company has the policy in place you can ask them to adjust the way you will fit into the role.
When I was working or looking for work , I would look for jobs ,
1 that I was Confident at doing,
2 , something I wouldn’t get severely injured if seizured
3 the area I worked in had decent space , if going into a seizure
4 stay away from any job that I thought was too dangerous for my safety ( construction, windows washing high and on the side of a skyscraper, and ect )
you can work at any job... just know your restrictions. i work at a part time daycare center cause i get ssi money. to much cash per month and i will lose my ssi money for that month. that and i have uncontroled food seizures and surgery. so i can't do anything high up (my bum leg and arm). results my vary.
just right down your epilepsy (e) cause, type of seizure, and uncontroled... contoled with meds... or seizure free. then add on your restrictions.
i have e friends that work at concert venues (as a tech guy), florist, a uber driver (both uber eats and taxi), and a up and comeing actor. the only thing that is stopping you is you.
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , there were a lot of job positions that I was able and confident with. It was whether or not I could get to that job and how well the pay was. Back in my day minimum wage was between $4.50 - $5 . An hour. But when I lived on my own I needed a job, where I could get payed more and afford renting an apartment . If I would have to drive , then that job would be out of my choices. Then there are the jobs, that I could use the city transportations and was it worth it or would I be able to get to the job on time. So there were many obstacles that I had to keep in mind before applying for any of the jobs.
