Does Anyone Else Get Nervous Starting New Medication?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Southampton, UK

I'm anxious at the moment because I start my new add on medication for my epilepsy. I'm having lacosamide added along side my tegretol. I just worry so much about side effects. I don't want to know about any side effects because if I read I'll think it and then I'll feel it. Can anyone who is on lacosamide just reasure me a little?

I'm staying at my friend's for a couple of days just so I don't get top nervous. I start the new meds tonight and I feel OK now I'm at my friend's.

I've had the anxiety and had to try meditation and telling myself to trust my doctor and his nurse. The thing to remember is change is a process not an event . When my doctor changes my medication is has become much better for me. It took several weeks. I keep a journal and that helps me. Best wishes and it also helps to share your concerns here.

When it was first brought up about me possibly changing to Keppra yes, I was nervous about the whole thing, but the way things turned out, because I was having so many issues on Tegretol I was actually more relieved than anything that I was getting off it.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , I started out on the brand name, Vimpat, in November 2019, & I didn’t have any insurance & I reached out to the manufacturer & was approved for their Patient Assistance Program & soon after that I got set up on a program that my local Epilepsy Foundation has & was able to get my Depakote through them. After my disability was approved in late 2022 & my insurance started in 2023, the generic had come out known as the Lacosamide. My Neurologist had me on 1 tablet 100mg both morning & night. Then I let her know about a seizure I had one time & she increased the morning dosage by another 1 tablet of 100mg I think it was & it started making my fingers shake a little bit & so I let her know that I couldn’t take that extra pill. Then when I let her know about another seizure, she increased my night dosage by 50mg & I haven’t had any problems. She thinks because it’s a lower dosage & it’s at night. So, in the morning I take 1 Vimpat 100 mg & Depakote 1 tablet of 250mg & Depakote 1 tablet of 500mg. At night I take Vimpat 1 tablet of 150mg & Depakote 1 tablet of 500mg. I don’t see anything wrong with reading what the side effects are & that way if you start experiencing symptoms you’ll have an idea that what you’re experiencing could possibly have something to do with those meds if they continue. I wish you luck on the new pills. Your friend in Texas, Becky
