For My Girls On Hormone Replacement Therapy… Does Estrogen Trigger Seizures For You?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

My seizures always happened during my cycle. After surgery 8 years ago my seizures have been non existent. I tried hormone replacement therapy using the gel on my thigh. Two days after using the gel I had a seizure.

The past 2yrs my seizures increased to monthly and notice it was about the time I would have my menstrual. Medicine hasn't helped a little so they aren't monthly. However glad reading this post, as my gynecologist suggested since in premenopause and experience effects to do hormone therapy. I was contemplating what to do as I was worried could increase seizures, and my mom did hormone therapy and had 3 different types of cancer and cancer Dr said hormone therapy could potentially cause cancer. I was hesitant to try it, now after reading this think I definitely not going to do hormone therapy.

Estrogen levels are high so both brain & metabolic rate then increases. During menstrual cycle the rise & fall of them is why more prone to seizures. The same way moods occur in thosew/o epilepsy. Ask Dr bout yours to see if may be helped by rise in meds at this time for best advice for to help yourself.

Tiffany I wish I could give you a concrete answer. I’ve had epilepsy for 21 years now and it was a fight to find the right combination. Knowledge is power and don’t be afraid to do your own research in addition to working with your neurologist. You are your own best advocate! Love and Light!

Hormones estrogen & testostrogen are used by brain. High levels in epileptics so monthly rise & fall brain reacts to is why seizures may occur. Your surgery eliminated seizures no need to worry bout this now. Congrats to you for being seizure free for 8 years & now too.

Before menopause, all my seizures were mid-day and within 2-3 three days prior to or after starting my period. After menopause my seizures have all been around 8-9pm. I used prem-pro for several years and it did not affect my seizures.
