How To Tell If My Medication Is What Is Waking Me Up

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

So for the past few months, I've been waking up around 3 AM or 5 AM and I just can't fall back asleep, I don't know what to do. I've tried almost everything I've taken sleep studies. I've tried mouth guards. I've tried melatonin, and I'm not entirely sure at this point. So I'm pretty sure it's probably my epilepsy. Medication, that's keeping me awake.
I'm currently on zonegran and trileptal.

It can be your meds because it's happened to me with a recent one I got. But luckily melatonin brand called Olli works very well. But if you're not able to find a solution tell your neurologist because lack of sleep can cause frequent seizures.

When I was taking my epilepsy medicine I had a hard time sleeping also. For some particular reason insomnia is one of the side effects. Go figure. One thing I found that worked for me was taking CBD gummies. I would take 1 or 2 gummies 1hr before bed and that helped me sleep. In the morning I felt amazing. Not drowsy. I felt I got a good night's rest when I was taking the CBD gummies.

The most common sense explanation I have received for why I wake up at those time ranges as well is because that around 4 to 6 is the average time people have their nocturnal seizures so my body is trying to subconsciously wake up before a seizure can start.

I usually can't get to sleep untill around 11 or so most nights and have my seizures (that I can tell) at night. The doctors tell me the anxiety disorder I have is also somewhat responsible for developing my Insomnia that keeps me awake so late as well, in fear of waking up to being strapped to a hospital bed or going through it.

Its a hard cycle so I usually smoke some ganja before bed and have made an mct oil infused with thc to relax at night. I set up a system where I shut down all of the lights and turn my favorite podcast on and play a few games of magic online to distract my attention while the thc is setting in. Then i sit and listen to the podcast quietly.

Waking up at 3 still sucks a bag of em lol, but the earlier I can get to sleep the easier it gets. I save my shower for the mornings now, load my tools in the mornings now, do a early morning supply run so i can meet my employees at 8 when they start but still have some billable hours in. I do estimates with my coffe.

Basically I just try to find a way to say fine, this is when you are going to make me be up, I'll use it and won't let you beat me. I just look at epilepsy as my opponent and I refuse to let him win because f him.

Just my thoughts on the early morning stuff....sorry about the rant lol
