How Do You Combat Dizziness?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Well! I go from sit to stand s-l-o-w-l-y. First! I scoot to the edge of my chair. Second! I place my hands to help boost me. Third! I stand, slowly. Fourth! I don’t walk until it feels right. How do I know if it feels right? I know that when I feel it. It helps me to sit for awhile before standing rather than try to fly out of bed.

Dizziness for me is a sign that a seizure can begin soon so I take quick action to prevent it. My daughter comes to my aid for safety’s sake and monitors me. She makes sure I take extra dosages of my meds and lie down in a safe place.

If I get very dizzy quickly I know I’m about to have a seizure. That stinks. With normal dizziness I was told to let the blood flow before standing up. Then get up very slowly. It seems to help.

You are giving some solid advice and I need to take it. I am one to fly out of bed or a chair and then almost hit the floor from the dizziness. I was looking online one time if I could have a conscious seizure while standing up. Never thought to sit back down 😑

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member,

How do I combat dizziness?

I don’t know if this is helpful, but I hope so. I started having vertigo, “dizziness”, before seizure began

When I realized I was dizzy. I would stay in the position I was at until the dizziness stopped. If I would be able to sit down if I’m standing. If I’m sitting down when it begins, I will try to lay down. The closer to the floor, the better. Less likely to fall.

Keeping my head in the upright position and moving slowly no matter what position I’m in is best. What I mean by keeping my head up right; is to keep my head aligned with my spine. no quick moves with my head by using my neck. In fact, stabilizing my head in position with my spine, helps me keep my balance. When I am standing, and I need to turn or even sitting and I need to turn, I would turn my body instead of my head at the neck. This keeps the spinal column in alignment. Focusing on the recommended maneuvers for vertigo, (aka- dizziness) is highly recommended. These can be found on YouTube easily. All you have to do is type in how to treat dizziness/ vertigo.
If you’re able to have somebody help you, that’s even better. Vertigo or dizziness is usually, but not always, having to do with the crystals in your ears being displaced. The purpose of the exercises are to help put the crystals back in place in the ear canal. On occasion, dizziness can come from the spine. Which is due to a pinched nerve, an example: your spine being out of alignment.
Having pressure on your spinal cord can cause dizziness as well.

That’s how I approach things. Slowly, and do the maneuvers to help the crystals that are in the ear for balance back in place, or see if I can have a chiropractor help realign my spine. Those are just some things that I do. It helps either way. If after having your spine realigned doesn’t help. It’s probably an inner ear issue. Doctors. recommend the inner ear exercises Before you. are sent to a chiropractor.
Even your PCP can show you how to do the maneuvers.(PCP – primary care physician.)
Your PCP may also recommend taking a medication if the exercises don’t work or are too bothersome even with the exercises.
I hope this helps someone along the line. Unfortunately I can’t remember the name of the exercises. Sorry about that.

Hope you have a seizure and dizzy free day.
