I Have Nocturnal Seizures, I Also Sleepwalk. Is It Ok For Me To Drive? My Sleepwalking Has Worried My Family,
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , People can have seizures while walking that can put them in dangerous situations & you must realize that just because dangerous things haven’t happened to you or you haven’t been put in those situations doesn’t mean someone else won’t be put in those situations. My Dad had bad grand mal seizures & years ago he had a seizure & walked down a busy road & at the time he was living alone & so after that particular seizure we put him in a nursing home. Talking about someone not walking off a cliff is no joke because that could possibly happen. Someone could be out hiking or enjoying themselves somewhere & end up having a seizure & do that. Seizures are a serious thing. You might be able to fall during a seizure & get up & brush it off but not everyone can do that & some have hit their head. Falling during a seizure can be a serious issue. Just remember, not everyone reacts the same as you before, during & after a seizure. We are all different & we all react differently to our own seizures. Not everyone’s seizures can be controlled by medication & so their seizures continue & so they try to find other options.
They advised me it’s illegal to drive in this state for 6 months after a seizure. But I’m allowed to sleepwalk and ride city buses for hours on end. The buses are free here, lol
A blackout-type seizure while awake is the same as sleepwalking. May do silly things not dangerous like say walk off a cliff. Agree ask Dr if part of seizure at night. Also if driving is safe or not.
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , I don’t know where you live but in the United States each state has its own time frame of how long someone must go without driving after having a seizure. For example, here in Texas we must go 3 months without driving after a seizure. Most but not all of my seizures occur in my sleep. A few years ago while taking a nap I apparently had a seizure during a nap cause I woke up with a different pair of PJ pants on with no memory of getting up & changing pants & then about the same time a year later I had a seizure while sleeping & apparently had a loss of bladder & apparently walked to my bathroom & removed my feminine pad & went back to bed with no memory of any of it. But it’s best to discuss it with your doctor but it’s likely where you live suggests you go a certain time without a seizure before you drive again. Think of it this way, it’s better to be safe than sorry & you don’t want to put yourself or anyone else’s life in jeopardy if you continue to drive right after having a seizure. So, talk to your doctor. Welcome to the site. Your friend in Texas, Becky
This is something to ask a doctor at the next appointment. It sounds like something that needs to be done soon for everyone to be more calm and cause less seizures.
