If You Have Replaced Tegretol, Which Other Drug Took Its Place?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Following my neurofeedback sessions I was able to reduce my seizures significantly. And the seizures I continue to have almost always occur when I am asleep. It would seem as though I can control my brain activity much better when awake.

dialantin, tegretol, depakote, and Keppra are the medications I can remember taking. Keppra is the one I'm taking right now and I'm seizure free so far.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member Well Tegretol is the brand name for carbamazepine. It's getting pretty old now. I think it's around ten years older than Depakote. Keppra is only just over 20 years old. maybe a bit more.

I was on Tegretol for 25 years and it was great but I had issues the last 5 years.

I took Tegretol & Topamax together for awhile.
Then, MANY other combos that included Dilantin, Depakote, Trileptal & probably others too that I’m forgetting! I had weird side effects with all of those and was eventually switched to Keppra about 10 years ago. And Luckily, I’ve been seizure-free ever since, without the weird side effects! It just really depends on the person. It’s so individual. And it’s so important to have a good neurologist, that will work with you & check your levels & make sure your seizures are under control; without side effects reducing the quality of your life. 🌞

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member Oh right Yeah, I'm not sure on that one. Probably just poorly worded. It' does sound more like it's referring to controlling of thoughts. You may need to ask the person who posted this what it means that part isn't that clear.
