Both responsive neurostimulation (RNS) and vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) are options to consider for drug-resistant epilepsy when surgery is not possible or has not worked. RNS involves implanting a device in the skull that delivers electrical pulses to the brain when seizure activity begins, while VNS implants a device under the chest skin that stimulates the vagus nerve to help prevent seizures. One MyEpilepsyTeam member shared positive experiences with VNS controlling their seizures over 12 years. However, the benefits of RNS and VNS increase over time, with almost half seeing a 50% or greater reduction in seizures after 2 years. It's important to discuss the risks and benefits of each option with your doctor to determine what might work best for you. There is also growing evidence for CBD derived from cannabis as a potential treatment option. One recent study found it led to a reduction in seizure frequency in drug-resistant epilepsy. Discuss trying medical CBD with your doctor to see if it could be beneficial for you.

I have a VNS... and along with the brain surgeries I've had to remove the actual trigger points, and the CBD oil I take... it is one of the best decisions for seeing any positive progress in my epilepsy. An RNS is the next step for me. I'm not sure I'm ready for another brain surgery though. I just got control of my chronic migraines. Not ready to chance those coming back!

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member Yes please, if you don't mind! I have heard that the RNS is a lot better than the VNS

I have had both the VNS and RNS. The RNS is better. Not only does the RNS help control seizures but it also records my seizures everyday. I send the information in to my doctors everyday from home. If you would like to know more about the RNS I can tell you everything.
