How Long Does It Take For New Meds To Get To A Therapeutic Dose?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I started taking vimpat about 3 months ago now as well as tegretol and I'm still having seizures. My epilepsy nurse did say she can't guarantee I will ever be seizure free but I was hoping the seizures would decrease.

Sometimes when you take 2 different anticonvulsants they may interact with each other then trigger a seizure, for over 5 years I was put on Tegretol and it interacted with phenytoin causing me seizures, I kept telling the Doctor's they ignored me till I showed them the info that proved that they were wrong, if ever I get any new meds I check it out before taking.

i take 600 milligrams vimpat and 600 of lamotrigine daliy. this was the third or fourth 'cocktail' that i've been on. thus far, i've been seizure free for about 5 years. your dr will probably try another combo for you, until they find something that works for you. i wish you luck and speed on finding the right combo of meds

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member Yeah the way it works over here is you would have your Neurologist then there is a ESN or Nurse practitioner who works under the Neurologist but above all that there is a Epileptologist who makes sure things are running smoothly.

I’m wouldn’t be comfortable seeing just my nurse. Especially if I have a question that only the Neurologist /Epileptologist can answer..

It can depend on what type of epilepsy you have, cause there are 52 types of seizures, with me I have brain damage on both sides of my brain, but we are all different how anticonvulsants work with us.
