How Do I Explain My Sensitivity To Sound To My Coworkers?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Minneapolis, MN

I live two blocks from a fire station and have no reactions when they go on calls with their alarms. I live a block from the train tracks and have no reaction when they go by or sound the horns (if that is the correct expression?). But I can't handle music. I have to wear ear plugs to enter JCP or Dollar Tree and that is still to loud that it is painful and I react like I am having a migraine with such intense headaches and then blurriness kicks in.

Just tell them. If they can't understand they can just kiss off. I am so tired of insensitive people. Seriously, and people DO NOT understand epilepsy nor do they want to understand it. We have to stick together and support each other. Sorry I'm so blunt. I can understand your sensitivity, I'm opposite I have to have loud music when I'm upset. But I understand because I'm a super sensitive person emotionally. If that makes sense, the loud music makes me lose focus on my emotions.

I have problems with loud noises that are repetitive. Such as vacuuming, riding in a car for more than 2 hours(the road noise) and sometimes crowded places that are very loud. Music I can handle so I wear noise cancelling ear buds and listen to music in these situations.

You are experiencing Hyperacusis ( Sensitivity to certain sounds and noise ) with your Epilepsy . These certain sounds trigger you seizures.

You may want to look into using Noise Cancellation Headphones.

If your coworkers don't or won't understand, and if you are a good worker, then go to the superior. Explain your situation and politely explain that some simple accomodations will help you be more productive and provide a better all around work atmosphere.

It's understandable to feel self-conscious about explaining sound sensitivity to coworkers. Here are some suggestions: Focus on how certain sounds cause you distress rather than saying you "can't handle" music. Provide examples of sounds you find painful or disorienting. Ask if they can lower radios or music around you Show Full Answer

It's understandable to feel self-conscious about explaining sound sensitivity to coworkers. Here are some suggestions: Focus on how certain sounds cause you distress rather than saying you "can't handle" music. Provide examples of sounds you find painful or disorienting. Ask if they can lower radios or music around you. Consider noise-canceling headphones or earplugs if loud environments are unavoidable. You could also speak to an HR representative about reasonable accommodations under the ADA for your neurological condition. They may be able to adjust environmental factors like noise levels that affect your symptoms.
