Help With Medical Bills?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question πŸ’
Pittsburgh, PA

Just asking for people's advice, I am getting all the bills in for having my epilepsy surgery, the 2 stays in the emu and it is very pricey and I've been off work for a couple months from the surgery, Does anyone know how I'd be able to get help paying for them? Thanks in advance!

I ran into a similar situation a few years back. I ended up with a $35,000 bill. Check with patient accounts at the Hospitals. Many have financial assistance, others use sliding scales. Etc.
Check with the Epilepsy foundation of PA.
epilepsy foundation of MO kept a long list of resources.

If none of these ideas work try reaching out to your epilepsy foundation. They usually have help with some of these challenges. They also help with getting you the medicine when you don't have insurance.

Might you be able to get assistance from an organization or possibly the State? I know there are funds set aside for people in need.

There are a few options that may help with managing the medical bills for your epilepsy surgery and related care:

1. Check if the drug manufacturers have patient assistance programs to help cover the costs of medications. These programs often have income qualifications to determine eligibility (source 2).

2. Carefully review each medical bill and compare to your explanation of benefits from your insurance to check for any errors. It's estimated 80% of medical bills have an error (source 2).

3. If you have any out-of-pocket expenses remaining even after insurance, ask your health care team if there are any local organizations or nonprofits that provide financial assistance for epilepsy care (source 1).

4. Consider finding an advocate like a family member or friend who can help you navigate the billing process if it's too overwhelming to manage right now (source 5).

Naomax can't you get on Medicare and/or medicaid?I'm on Medicare and if I hadn't it I don't know what I would have done.the CAT scans, the MRI's,the depth electrodes.I couldn't possibly have had all those procedures with out medicare.are you on a pres program to help with the med costs?I am on slot of expensive med and none are over $ 3.00.
Compared to 1,400 a month.I take alot of other pres and pay around $ 2.00 a month for each of them.my pres program is cigna.I also don't have any copays either for med or drs.my Medicare is molina.I would check into all the programs to help with your med cost.if you get Medicare you will have to find a Dr that takes your Medicare insurance (if ur able to get it. Good luck,Debby j
