Can Pain Trigger A Seizure?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Orlando, FL

let me explain my circumstances. I was getting a tattoo yesterday when I had a seizure.
it was my first tattoo so I have never felt this sort of pain before. there was no blackout, no convulsions, just a little face twitching.
so I wnt to know if pain can rigger a seizure so I can do my best to avoid another situation like that.

Sorry to hear about side affects of your episodes I actually can only imagine how painful it is having to go true that. I have been told my meds are chemical unrelated. with the tattoo its only seared on your skin not the vains and meat and each one I have gotten was in memory of family relatives I get ones that remind me of how close we were.

After my second brain surgery I decided I wanted to not take my pain meds. I ended up in the ER with some paralysis and they called my Neuro Sergeon. I was handed the phone and my sergon asked me "are you trying to have seizures? Cause this is a way to test it"
He informed me that causing the body excessive pain causes the brain to have increased activity and in people with Epilepsy that can cause a seizure.
So if your pain threshold was exceeded and you had overstimulated your brain, yeah a seizure is possible.

My husband has severe pain. He has recently started having seizures. He literally stares off into space and jerks and remembers nothing. He doesn't think he is having them. He doesn't register anything on any tests either. Trust me it's horrible. I noticed it's worse when his pain level is really high.

I've had 6 tattoos and 11 piercing and not once did I have a seizure during them I say it depends on how much pain your body can take some people can take it but others can't best advice I can give you is to avoid pains like that again and make sure you keep taking your medication as scheduled and have plenty of rest hopefully my advice helps
