Do You Ever Get Treated Differently When People Know You Have Epilepsy?
When people find out I have epilepsy, they treat me like a baby/kid. They act like I can't do something myself or it might be dangerous for me. I'm taking a carpentry class & the teacher & the nurse thinks it's dangerous for me to do, but there's nothing I'm interested in.
I lost a lot of friends once they knew and people do treat you different even if they don't mean it sometimes they do. But I think that is due to so little being said and little information past to people regarding what we have
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member, same here. I don't tell anyone I have epilepsy. but once they witness me have a seizure, everything turns around.
I prefer not telling people anymore, as most people don't know the different types of epilepsy's there are and I feel exhausted explaining to people even if they are friends. In general it gets too confusing for a lot of people to follow, especially since to them hospital visits are associated with physical injury. Some people try to be understanding, but I feel by not letting people know I can allow myself to be treated the same as everyone else free of judgement in this scenario. I do hope one day this changes, and more knowledge on epilepsy is spread to the masses.
Yes I have but that’s when I realized those people were not supposed to be in my life because no one should have the ability to judge you. Be confident and accept epilepsy.
Oh...and the students who are making fun of you should be spoken to very firmly by the teachers and counsellor privately.
