Finding A Neurologist

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Morris, MN

I moved a few months ago to west central Minnesota and considering going to a different neurologist. I like the person that I work with now, but she's in Fargo ND and that's over 2 hours away. If I'm going to go that far, I could go just a little further and check out Mayo in the cities or maybe there are some really good doctors closer. Anyone have suggestions? Wilmar, Alexandria, St. Cloud, Fergus Falls would all be good options. Or any suggestions on how to find a good neurologist? I… read more

Hi @A MyEpilepsyTeam Member.

In my opinion an Epileptologist is much better than a normal Neurologist. Epileptologists are great in understanding the ins and outs on Epilepsy. Most Neurologists know the basics about Epilepsy.

A neurologist may figure out you med or meds combo and might schedule you for a EEG or MRI you. But they don’t alway look for the other possible paths. Maybe see if your a candidate for a Brain Surgery. Maybe talk to see if your interested in the VNS or RN . The biggest thing I experienced with the Neurologist, was trying the different medications and upping or downing the doses. There are some Neurologists who don’t listen to what your experiencing and just think that your talking nonsense.

An Epileptologist will possibly find different pathways to take and can help educate you for things your not sure of. Mybe your experiencing something and your not sure if it’s related to your med, you Epilepsy or both. They are open to and want to know what we’re going through , so they can possibly help. All the Epilepy Clinics show some kind advertising with other Epilepsy supporters and orgs. Maybe a Epilepsy conference scheduled , info On a Epilepsy camp program, where you can find Epilepsy support groups and ect.

I’m not sure if there are any up in the northern towns of Minnesota, but I can garrantee that there few different clinics in the Minneapolis/St.Paul cities and suburbs, have Epileptologists. I go to one in St. Louis Park . The name of that one is MINCEP Clinic. That where I visit my Epileptologist.

Not a problem, we all go to the clinic or hospital that is closest to us and works for us :-)
