Has Anyone Ever Been Told That Their Diet Can Be Related To Seizures?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I know that a poor eating habit can cause havoc to someone who has diabetes - because they need to regularly check their blood sugar levels, but I am not aware of that being the case for someone who has epilepsy - especially when they are on one AED that suppresses the appetite, and another one that counteracts the side-effect of the said AED. Just curious.

When I was a child my doctor put me on an all fat diet, and no sugar. I didn't have any seizures then.

When I changed my diet to eat more healthy and lost weight I started having fewer seizures.

Yes, when I was a child I was on an all fat diet and that helped my seizures. I can't have caffeine because that makes my hands shake.

Diet, sleep and stress management play a roll along with the medication.

I was placed on the MAD (Modified Atkins Diet...it is basically the Keto diet but with more protein) diet for several years and finally got my seizures under control on. I have met multiple people who had similar results. I had refractory (uncontrollable) epilepsy for many many years. I was investigates for brain surgery but denied. Finally I tried that diet out of desperation at a clinic specializing in it for adults with Epilepsy. It was a game changer!!! I am also hypoglycemic and I no longer struggle with low blood sugar.

A form of this diet is actually the oldest known treatment for epilepsy, prior to all the medications. Worth a try but difficult.
