Has Anyone Else Studied Something All Night And Never Could Remember It But When You Woke Up The Next Morning You Knew It All?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Kansas City, KS

When I was in school I had to memorize a few speeches. I studied all night but never could get it down. So I went to bed. The next morning I knew it all as soon as I woke up.

YES! I forget everything. All day!

- Anyone else Forget what day it is, or what is the date? Maybe 10- 20x a day? If it is garbage day? Even though you already looked at the date 5x already???

- I forget what I was going to purchase when I walk to the store. Even with a text msg to myself on my phone + a small list in my wallet RIGHT NEAR THE MONEY so there is no way I can forget again, but I do anyway? LOL
I end up walking around the store with that "weird feeling" and KNOWING you are forgetting something... Kinda like you're on a funny TV show.... LOL
I just forget the lists are there, until I get home and realize whatever it was I forgot. Just hope it isn't the MAIN ingredient!

- How about what to make for food. After going back and forth in my and refrigerator my head 5x... (looking at expiration dates, different options etc...) FINALLY sort out the details in my head about what to make, then completely forget to make it or the other option... 5 mins later you realize you already started cooking something else. LOL
FUN FUN!

- I even stopped cooking upstairs on the regular stove after burning stuff. I heard my phone ring downstairs (because I forgot that too) and had bacon cooking upstairs etc... and only use a little toaster down in "my spot". This way I can't forget that I am cooking bacon and burn it. Again. Or burn anything else like burn down the house.

*** PLEASE: Just have fun with it! Life is good! Getting frustrated or mad or sad about it is your enemy. Be thankful that you woke up today and appreciate and enjoy the day however you can, even if it is different than before, or different from what other people have to deal with.
MANY people woke up dead today. You didn't. Be thankful!

Before my diagnosis I actually just knew the material after seeing it once. I was the best student in class every time. After my diagnosis everything became difficult to grasp. I had to read and reread over and over. My memory suffered. Now it's...still difficult.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member I have to say that I know what you are talking about and the fact is that this situation is even more complicated than it seems, for example my brain works even more weirdly. If I were to learn something in the morning I'd forget everything about it in around 15 minutes and 8-10 hours later near the evening I'd remember everything. And this includes both words or definitions and notions as well as musical lines and lyrics. The thing is that since I started having seizures my sleeping pattern got messed up and I believe the brain is cycling during the day in areas where it should doing the night. This doesn't seem to be a problem to me, as I can work very well through this mechanism, but I believe that at least in your case you could use this kind of brain reprogramming to get past your area of the brain that is affected by seizures and develop a new memory mechanism as it seems that you brain is still capable to acquire information but by other mechanisms.
I'd bring up the notion of neurofeedback that many neurologists unfortunately dismiss, and that is weird because this way neurology dismisses psychiatry (ain't that funny?) 😂 For example, cognitive therapies are a neuro feedback mechanisms and they serve as an alternative to medication in several mental illnesses.
But I think you should have this discussion with your neurologist next time you see him/her and maybe he/she'll be more open minded, you've suffered enough and I believe you deserve a second chance and I don't talk about going to school again :D, school sucks, I ended up more dumb when I ended school than when I started it (and that's due to bad teachers), but I'm pretty sure you have something that makes you feel alive and makes you feel like life is worth fighting for, for example I see you like art and drawing which is great, having a better memory mechanism can help you expand this art into new dimensions so if I were you I wouldn't just aim for seizure free but also for a stronger brain and it's worth bringing up a conversation with your neurologist about ways to improve your brain cognitive functions, and that way you can also see if he/she really cares about you or just considers you a science experiment, you deserve to know the truth no matter how hard it is.
