My Doc Says As My EEG Was Clear Of All Activity, I Might Not Have Epilepsy?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question đź’

I have recently moved from Cornwall to Manchester. In doing so, I have changed neurologist. He asked me to do a fresh mri and eeg so he could se for himself what was going on. The mri came back clear, as did the eeg? Now whilst this should be great news, my Doc is saying I may not actually have epilepsy at all. Also sounds like good news. However, firstly, he thinks the symptoms I have, could be due to mental illness
I asked him to explain the previous 2 eeg's which showed massive amounts of… read more

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member They most likely don't mention the epilepsy because it's already confirmed that you have it. The eeg's you have now are basically apart of ongoing testing.

That sounds odd! I've an epileptic for 10+ years. Last year I had a few days in hospital, not because of a seizure. However I had an EEG and I have another on Monday. A routine now it seems. Nobody has mentioned epilepsy!!! Why don't they tell you everything! Aargh!

I had that happen when I was younger, but my doctor never said it was because I didn't have Epilepsy. There is a such thing as non-Epileptic seizures!

An in office EEG may not show seizure activity like mine simply çause not having a seizure during one. An EEG while seizure is brought on needed to for Dr to see changes. As said no meds but done in hospital for safety. As Dr if hasn't suggested already. Was half hoping no change cause if non-epileptc could be eliminated but no luck. At least know my meds stave off biggies .

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , Did you do an in office EEG or did you have it done where you spent 3 to 5 days or so in the hospital? Some EEGs come back normal even though a person has seizures. In late January 2024 I did an at home EEG for a couple days & it came back normal & the nurse said that meant that I didn’t have any seizures during that time. In November 2019 when I began seeing my current Neurologist, she had me do an in hospital 5 day video EEG & my seizures aren’t as frequent or severe as some peoples & so I didn’t have any seizures while there, but the Neurologist said that while I slept the EEG showed mostly Focalized seizure activity but some Generalized seizure activity & so it showed something. Most but not all of my seizures occur in my sleep, which are known as nocturnal seizures. When you stay in the hospital for a few days for an EEG, they take you off your medicine. So if you haven’t had something like that done, then maybe you can ask your doctor about it. If you’re not happy with your current Neurologist, you could always look for another doctor & get a second opinion. Good luck. Your friend in Texas, Becky
