Advice Needed

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Is anyone dealing with a parent that is starting to show signs of dementia and how are you handling the issue if you don’t mind sharing. My mom is already in a retirement home in independent living, but assisted living as available. I find myself in this situation and I am seeking advice as I can find it. Many thanks.

Things can get difficult as our parents get older. I definitely know because my dad is 91 years old and he tends to forget things but there’s times when I don’t remember what he had told me. You just have to keep a positive attitude and believe that we are all in good hands. 🙏

Rusti I’ll admit my 92 year old grandmother can be a damn pill. I love her dearly. Out of three grandsons that she has I’m the only one that will even pick up the phone to call her or even go see her. It’s always been that way. I’m her oldest grandchild . Believe me it will kill me the day we loose her, like it did the year we lost my grandfather some years ago. But yes my grandmother does forget things now. Like birthdays or even the year I graduated from high school. She hasn’t forgotten our names yet. Mary I will sh you the best sweetie. Please be patient it takes plenty of patients to deal with someone like what you’re dealing with now. Good luck. ☺️

Remember that taking care of yourself is important. You don't have to prove how much you love your mom by sacrificing your own well-being.
You want the best care for your mom and you are the one who is thinking clearly and rationally as you find that " best care". I hope you have trusted friends and family who will support you as you support your mom.
Take care Mary.
