How Do I Change My Sleep Schedule?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Brisbane, AU

What I'm trying to do is go from night owl to early bedtime early riser, I have a few ideas about how to do this, but my main issue is how do I do it and not undo all my good work with staying seizure free.
Has anyone done this before?

All I can suggest is do it a little at a time. For example, if you're up watching tv or reading( whatever you do to keep busy in the evening) try doing less of it. Maybe shut off the tv by a certain time. Read a while. It might help you relax more. ( just a suggestion)

Maintaining healthy sleep hygiene like avoiding screens before bed, limiting caffeine, and creating a relaxing bedtime routine can also help support the transition. Discuss your goal with your neurologist. They can provide guidance on adjusting medication timing if needed and monitor for potential issues. Having a doctor involved can help ensure you change your schedule safely.

Time schedules are not something easy to change. What may help is asking your specialist if there are best sleeping tips to follow. Another question to ask your specialist is how this is going to impact your medication. Wish you all the best in going through with this change.

Reduce your stress. Stress can be a trigger for some people. I have to question taking melatonin because it can reduce the strength of your seizure meds. But that also depends on your type of seizures and medications. Taking melatonin always gave me seizures. But everyone is different.

That's it. You just make small adjustments until you reach the time you're looking for.
