Has Anyone Else Experienced Chest Pain/tightening With VNS?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have had VNS for about 18 months now and I haven't really had any problems, but last night I started having a strong tightening in my chest. At first I thought I was having a heart attack because it was so tight and painful, but then I realized it was happening when the stimulator went off. This morning while I was at work it was hurting so bad that it nearly brought tears to my eyes and is now hurting when it's not even stimulating. I haven't had any adjustments to it in a couple of months… read more

I had experienced what felt like an electrical shock in my chest, it was so painful. I did call my doctor the next day and they had me come in and did and xray of my lead wires to make sure they were ok. They were. I had them turn my VNS off because it scared me so bad. At my next appointment I was talking to my doctor about it and what could have caused it. I was in the master bathroom at the sink right beside an electric toothbrush on a charger. It was a new item in our house, and by my hubby's sink. They come with warnings not to use with pacemakers, VNS follow the same rules! It must have disturbed it. We unplugged it and I havent had any more problems now that my VNS is back on.

Your post caught my attention and then I saw the date. I'm sure that by now all is well(with the VNS), but someone else might have the same question. I've also felt that strong tightening in my chest. If it happens at the doc's office while having your VNS adjusted, then it's probably set too high for you to tolerate. This does give that tight and painful feeling. If it happens while at home, as it did for you, then by all means contact your doctor. BTW, it's been over five years now: are your seizures under control?

I have had a VNS since 2012, and went through the same problem so I had it turned off. It's still implanted, but I haven't used it in several years!
Keppra, and Vimpat, have helped me more. I'd still ask your doctor about it though.
