Strokes And Epilepsy

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Houston, TX

I had a stroke a month ago. My hubby watched me and decided this was not seizure activity and called the EMTS. I got the drug that you have to have within 3hours so i was very lucky. I have some weakness on my left side but it is stronger already after all the rehab. I've been reading that people with epilepsy are more likely to have a stroke. Did anyone else know this? Have you experienced strokes too? What alarms me is unless someone knows you really well, they won't know you were having a… read more

Who Has A VNS?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Glendale, AZ

What type of seizures do you have and how much of a success has it been for you? I have a VNS for 16 years. Within the first month of treatment it cut my seizure activity in half. I have complex partial seizures and it has been a blessing for me to have. I used to have 10-12 seizures in a day lasting 10 minutes or so and now I am only having 10-15 a year now. It's been replaced three times and I currently have model #106. With the auto stim feature turned on.

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member

The procedure costs money to remove also, with my medicaid at least, so thats why we left mine in.

Does Anyone Know What Can Make The Dizziness Side Effect Worse? And How You Manage It?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Brisbane, AU

Hey everyone,

I've been on Keppra for around three months now and noticed that even though everyone says their major issues are normally the rage, anxiety mood related. I've noticed that mine are more related to dizziness, high heart rate, sudden arm and handshaking and unsteadiness. I'm also on Topamax as well which also has the dizzyness side effect so I'm wondering whether this has something to do with this.
Anyway, I'm just wondering how do you manage it?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member Sorry for the really late reply. I'm on 1000 mg of Keppra and 500mg of Topamax both per day. As of now I don't get the dizziness. I had it until the end of last year then.

Have You Ever Read Something In Your Head But When You Try Reading It Out Loud You Say The Wrong Word?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Monterey, CA

Today, I was reading a prewritten script for an educational video I'm working on. As I was recording my voice, my mind knew to say the word "fax" however, the word "max" came out of my mouth. This has never happened to me and I'm not one to mix words. I know, because when I used to do legal aid, and I had to read out loud tons of legal documents.

This happened twice today, and it has made me a little concerned. I know my seizures invade my speech area and prevents me from speaking. However… read more

I am reading about the comments about the applied diets. (Ketogena and Modifications Adkins.) . They are a type of treatment. How many of you are prescribed by a nutritionist?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member

Very healthy but no evidence it will help reduce or impact seizures.

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
San Antonio, TX

I have been noticing my hearing loss has gotten worse over the last few years. Went for a hearing test and yes it was has gotten really bad in the last six years. The only thing that has happened to me in the last six years, is being diagnosed with epilepsy. Has anyone else had sever hearing loss after being diagnosed with epilepsy?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member

Not so much hearing loss, but a ringing in my ears. Could be that it was going to happen regardless of the medications.

Lacosamide and Brivaracterim are medications which I've been on for a bit over 3.5years. Like with all my previous medications I am aware that there are side effects
Perampanel was prescribed to me and the side effects which were identified by those who care about me were Anxiety and Irritability, while the Neurologists🧑‍🎓👨‍⚕️ who are trained to help people were suggesting to increase perampanel to help stop the seizures. I gradually removed the medication which was a giant risk and it… read more
